(4440) Improved water wheel, Chakram
A modification of the paddle wheel in which the lower parts of the paddles are placed in a close fitting box to reduce spilling of the water from the edges of the paddle, and making it possible to lift water to comparatively greater heights. The labourers sit on a wooden or bamboo scaffolding erected over the installed wheel, whose paddles they push down with their foot. Known in India as `chakram`.
